Romario - a 1994 World Cup soccer winner - can now add 2008 Pro Footvolley Tour Hollywood Beach Champion to his long athletic resume. The world famous Brazilian superstar paired up with Rio de Janeiro based Joao Luis to capture a convincing title in what officially landed the spectacular sport of footvolley into the US pro sports landscape.
What a win - what an event!
In Sunday's elimination rounds - the tournament favorites - Adriano Rego & Jr. Perreira (Deerfield Beach, FL) lost a nail-biter to the Cariocas in the Semi-finals. On the other side, Igor Martins & Team USA Captain Sergio Menezes disappointed in losing to a super charged Paulo Ricardo & Alex (both also of Deerfield Beach, FL). Paulo Ricardo, a 2006 US Footvolley National Champion, played flawless in the semi-final rounds completely outshining one of the tournament's stars in Igor Martins. Alex complemented play with deft dinks to move the team onto the final.
In the final match - Romario and Joao made it look easy and taking the title home.
A Monster of a Sport Unleashed
Footvolley landed with a thunder on Hollywood Beach on March 8-9. With an overflowing crowd, spectators being turned away because of space - the City of Hollywood played host to what will be the nation's hottest summer sport - footvolley!
Univision Scores with National TV Broadcast
Univision -never one to not sense a new trend - did a LIVE broadcast for its Republica Deportiva Sunday morning show. Univision has a long history of betting correctly on seemingly 'risky' sport properties (FIFA U-20's, etc.) which later prove highly desirable with its core audience. Once again - the network proved it is three steps ahead of its competitors in airing portions of this fantastic event nationally. A killer footvolley bicycle kick to Univision Sports and the Republica Deportiva producers, staff, and hosts for having the foresights of winners!
